If you are bothered by adult content [so called "ads" ;-) ] on web pages you browse to from time to time:
here is how to do all your family a favour in saving band width and nerves.

You can avoid being distracted by all this volume consuming and flashing stuff when you are looking for serious content on the internet. The following example uses a Thomson SpeedTouch router. This device is used to connect a family house hold to the internet.
The connection is shared with a few computers in the living room, childrens room and home office. The device can be set up to block selected web addresses from passing through.
Also it can be set up to only allow a list of web destinations to be accessed by the house hold's computers. You just have to find out what domain names may pass (or should be blocked). Put up a list of theses names and type it into the router.

Maybe you will have to refer to the user manual to manage the router. Only the main steps are listed here.

At first access the user interface of the router. Open a web browser and type the router's IP address or device name into the address line. In this example it is

http://speedtouch.lan
or possibly
http://192.168.1.1
If you are asked about a password, then put in your credentials (check the manual for a password hint)
Then click on the menu entry "Toolbox" and the sub menu "Parental Control" (1). When you do the set up for the first time you notice that the filter is not used and the preset for domain names not listed is set to "Allow"(3).
Now click on "Configure"(2) to start the setup.

Translate this page:

Type the first domain name to be blocked in the field below "WebSite"(1). Leave the "Redirect" entry blank and click "Add"(2).

The entry is added to the list of blocked sites and one more input line appears.

Do so with all the web site names you want to block.
When finished set the filter active (1) and the leave the "Action for unknown sites" with the pre selected "Allow".
The router does now know that all not listed sites are allowed.

Here is a list of URLs that might help to block unwanted content that might be not suitable for your children:

  • s0.2mdn.net
  • www.addthis.com
  • cdn2.planetapes.de
  • ds.serving-sys.com

That is all. You have now common settings on all computers. Some browsers do allow site blocking as well. But so you would have to log on to each machine and do the setup on all possibly installed browsers.
